Project Benefits

The US 31 Corridor project from Indianapolis to South Bend is one of the most beneficial projects for the state. The advantages are well documented, and include both economic development benefits and travel and safety benefits.

Safety Benefits

  • The current road has fatality and other crash rates as high as 2.5 times the statewide average.
  • These crashes are due to congestion and the number of driveways on US 31.
  • The new road will prevent 2,600 accidents and 12 fatalities per year.
  • Completion of the full corridor will provide safety benefits totaling $2.6 billion.

Economic Benefits

  • Reduce estimated travel time  to 121.9 minutes from 143.2 minutes.
  • Generate $5.3 billion in savings from these reduced travel times.
  • Net projected savings over 30 years in vehicle operating costs.
  • Decline in vehicle hours of traffic of 4.3%.
  • Travel time savings of an estimated $454 million for Indiana trucks and $1.2 billion for car trips made for business purposes.

To recognize these benefits, it is important that the US 31 improvement project be completed as envisioned.   The US 31 Coalition can assist in finding additional funding if necessary.
